University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth have expertise and experience delivering economic analysis to blue economy development. Last year, the Blue Research Governance Group was founded at the University of Portsmouth and researchers work on fisheries economics and management funded projects (see section B.1.3) in the UK, EU and elsewhere (including Africa and Asia).

The specific contribution to the project is to conduct economic analysis of alternative measures regarding the economic viability of the new biodegradable fishing gears development and the potential challenge to adopting them (economic cost-benefit analysis). An economic analysis of current recycling of waste, regarding the used nets is also planned and the impact of lost gear and other plastic waste from fishing vessels will be considered, including impacts on fishing industry. These studies are necessary for the success of the project because they will make it possible to identify the locks and lift them to facilitate the products adoption.
